The Emily Center at Phoenix Children's Hospital introduces "Our Path in Neonatal Intensive Care," a resource designed to assist families with infants in intensive care by providing essential information prior to their discharge from the hospital. Certain features of this application could also be beneficial during clinic visits and emergency room consultations.
When children are hospitalized, parents often experience confusion as they navigate medical terminology used by healthcare professionals. While providers may believe they are communicating clearly, they often overlook whether their patients truly understand the instructions given. The ability to rephrase the information provided is a strong indicator of comprehension.
"Our Path in Neonatal Intensive Care" was developed with several key objectives:
- To facilitate communication between families and healthcare staff from admission through hospitalization.
- To empower parents with the knowledge they need before leaving the hospital.
- To provide parents with a framework for acknowledging their uncertainties and encouraging them to ask questions.
- To guide families on what information they should communicate to nurses and physicians, ensuring that the care team can verify that families have received accurate information and are prepared to support the patient effectively.
- To bolster families' confidence in caring for their child at home post-discharge, making them aware of potential warning signs and appropriate responses to these issues.
Founded in 1990 and named in honor of Emily Anderson, who bravely fought a rare form of leukemia until her passing just before her 17th birthday, The Emily Center aims to address frustrations encountered by parents facing a scarcity of easily understandable health information. The center provides free, accurate health resources for families of children in Arizona. For more information, visit www.emilycenter.org or follow them on Twitter @emilycenter.
The application "Our Path in Neonatal Intensive Care" has been supported by a grant from Cox.
